Description
The Department of Economics at Xavier University is unique because we train our students thoroughly in both business and social sciences. This means our students learn how to think critically about social issues and business problems, and to read, write and research more effectively. We are asking for your support to help make valuable academic experiences available to our students and to meet other important needs that they might have.
In the past, our March Gladness funds were used to support research assistantships and conference presentations by our students and field trips for some economics classes. Below is a testimonial from a student whose research assistantship was supported by our previous March Gladness campaign:
"My experience as a Research Assistant for the Economics Department was made entirely possible by money donated through March Gladness. It is something I am forever grateful for, as it helped me take my first steps into the world of research and gave me immeasurable knowledge and experience in the study of my passion."
Donations are applied to...
(1) two NEW partial tuition scholarships ($1,200 each) based on student financial needs,
(2) stipends given to students for working on research projects with their professors,
(3) student participation in conferences and
(4) various classroom related expenses for students (e.g. field trips).
Personal Message
We very much appreciate your support for our students. We used previous year's donations from our March Gladness campaigns only on students and will do the same this year. It's understandable that you may wish to support different causes during March Gladness. If you are considering supporting a cause that benefits students directly and involves no overhead, please know that we will appreciate any support from you (even if it's $5).
Why are donations necessary?
During academic advising, students sometimes inquire about any need-based scholarships for economics majors, since some of them are struggling financially. We want to offer some NEW need-based scholarships to Xavier economics majors from this year onward.
Additionally, reading, writing and research skills are now more important than ever. Economics classes and research opportunities for our students to work with their professors on different projects can help sharpen these skills significantly.
Finally, field trips with economics classes and other experiential learning opportunities greatly enhance student learning!
